Whether you are a COMENSA member or a visitor hoping to learn more about Coaching and Mentoring research in South Africa, we hope that you will find some value here.

The purpose of the Research and Definitions Committee of COMENSA is to guide and facilitate the Coaching and Mentoring profession in South Africa to be scientific practitioner based.

Coaching is an evolving profession which is still in the process of developing its own body of knowledge. We believe that if Coaching is going to successfully develop into a fully fledged profession we will all have to develop an appreciation for life long learning and research as an integral part of our work as coaches. In so doing we will start to build a body of professional knowledge that is based or developed out of research.

We recognize that there are various levels of research that apply to the profession and we have organized this website accordingly.

We have divided this sub-section of the website into various research categories and invite the entire community to proactively post their research on the site. In so doing we hope to help establish Coaching and Mentoring in South Africa firmly in the scientific practitioner paradigm. Simply put, we want to encourage a culture where the coaching community starts to continuously reflect on their own work and the work of their peers.

The Scientific Practitioner Research Approach?

For a profession to be established, research has to be done at doctoral and masters level. This is the world of science and scientific knowledge.

Just as important are the practitioners who apply their trade on a daily basis in the world of everyday life and lay knowledge. This is the world of ordinary social and physical reality. This is where we spend most of our lives and we use lay knowledge, i.e. common sense, experiential knowledge, wisdom, insight and practical know how, to solve problems and gain insight into everyday tasks and problems. It is here that social and practical problems arise that require interventions, action, programmes or coaching.

Collectively this combined world of science and practice eventually develops a body of professional knowledge. It is our aim to encourage the sharing of this knowledge and research with the entire Coaching and Mentoring community.
