Supervision

I don’t really know much about supervision. How can I find out more?

The COMENSA Supervision Portfolio committee (SPC) holds online and/or in person sessions throughout each year, where such questions can be asked and explored. Also, most supervisors will welcome an exploration session to discuss your needs and what you are unsure about. This is often in the form of an online chemistry session.

Must my supervisor be registered with COMENSA for the supervision to be counted towards my COMENSA CPD score?

No, your supervisor does not need to registered with COMENSA to count towards your CPD score, but see “Choosing a Supervisor” above.

Can I count my peer group supervision towards CPD?

No, not unless there is a qualified supervisor among the peer group.

What can I do if I feel uncomfortable with my supervisor, or feel the need to find a different supervisor?

You should discuss the issue with your supervisor, in an open and honest way. Practising such courageous conversations is also a great skill to develop. From this you can choose to continue with that supervisor or discuss the change of supervisor. Supervisors would be open to such a change.

I don’t do very much actual coaching/mentoring. Do I still need monthly supervision?

If you are a credentialed coach or credentialed mentor you are only required to be in supervision for a  minimum of four sessions (group or individual, online or in person) per year.

Is it a good thing to have more than one supervisor?

Each coach or mentor’s need is different, so they need to assess what is best for them. Generally, a coach or mentor will choose one supervisor and build a strong trusting relationship with that one person, who then has the benefit of continuity and history.

I feel I’m getting all the help in my growth and development as a coach/mentor from my learning group. Do I still need supervision on top of this?

If you are a credentialed coach or credentialed mentor you are required to be in supervision a minimum of four sessions (group or individual, online or in person) per year on top of any other learning or development you are in.

I’m not earning enough to justify paying for supervision. What should I do?

If you are a credentialed coach or credentialed mentor, you are only required to be in supervision for a minimum of four sessions (group or individual, online or in person) per year. However, you could join a group supervision to take advantage of the (typically) lower cost. Other options are to approach several supervisors that resonate with you to request a lower rate or a contract rate for the year. They may or may not agree, but then you can decide what is best for you.

What is the cost of supervision?

This varies for individual and group supervision. And it varies between supervisors just like with coaches and mentors.

Which is the best form of supervision – individual or group supervision?

All supervision has benefits for the coach/mentor, but different types of supervision have slightly different approaches. With group supervision the coach/mentor can benefit from the issues and situations of the other coaches/mentors addressed in the sessions. It may also be better for new professionals or professionals that do not do many hours of actual coaching/mentoring.
In individual supervision the coach/mentor can benefit from focussed attention and an in depth and co-developed outcome.

Why do experienced coaches/mentors need supervision?

Irrespective of the coach/mentor’s experience, supervision improves the quality of the coaching/mentoring and reduces the risk for the client. This is achieved by honest reflection on every aspect of the coach/mentor’s practice, and being open to an alternative perspective. It is also good professional practice to have this alternative view and it may be necessary for practice insurance purposes.
